1. Evans ‘found’ the Minoan society.
2. He wrote the Minoan timeline.
3. He unearthed the palace at Knossos.
4. After he unearthed the palace, it started to deteriorate, so he started to re-build it.
5. Once he rebuilt it, it was impossible to tell the ancient from the new, so today historians have a hard time knowing what was really there before he ‘fixed’ it.
6. He also had his assistant take a daily log of what they were doing.

5 ways in which Evens influenced views of Cretan and Mycenaen
1. He divided the periods of the Bronze age into 3 distinct sections ( similar to those of the Egyptians)the Early, Middle, and Late.
2. Evens also influenced many scholars to think that these civilizations used wrighting that were pictures and bases their wrighting back to the cave dwellers which he has refered to their wrighting as the "raindeer period" and which these picture were to represent alphabetiform.
3.He made his readers now that a thousand years before the arrivial of classical Greece the Cretans had already passed through the stages of evolution and into a highly developed style of script.Which was found to be greek but is though to be an even more difficult process of which evens findings were the base.
4.Evens finding made the study of anthropology to be known as the study of primative or lower culture from his later lectures in Oxford, hes was also responsible to explore the transition from lower to highier forms of human existance.
5.He made it clear in his lecture at Oxford (1st) that the Crete civilization had two forms of script which are now call linear A and linear B which set the base for research of other parts or discoveries of the Crete civilizatoins languge or form of script.

1) Evans found intricate maze of buildings, pottery, pillars and frescoes when he uncovered ruins at Knossos.
2) He created the Minoan timeline, which divided the periods of the bronze age Cretan culture into three sections : the Early, Middle and Late Minoan.
3) Directed the chief to assistant keep a daily log of each day’s findings.
4) Evans showed what not to do when he reconstructed the site, combining the ancient looks with the looks of his time, because the weathering eroded the findings.
5) He displayed what is not a good idea and now portions of new sites elsewhere are left untouched so that if later generations have better technology they can see for themselves.

2)It was Evans who divided the time line of the bronze age into three differnet times being the early, middle and late minoan.

3)In "The Palace of minos at Knossos" Evans wishes to convince his readers that the Minoan civilization had developed the first complex and civilized for of writing above other civilizations of that time.

4)In 1950 the liner writing found in Crete was found to be Greek.

5)The fact that Evans used reconstruction tactics was condemned by modern day archaeologist due to the realization that our future counterparts may better understand the situation in which took place at sed location.

Sir Aurthur Evans influeced the way people thought about the Cretan and Mycenaen civilizations by 1. He created a Minoan timeline with the basics still in use today. 2. He proved that there actually was a sophisticated civilization where Greek mythology said there was. 3. He helped to introduce a scientific way of archeology. 4. He named the civilization of the bronze age that lived in Crete (the Minoans). 5. He showed (acidentally) that you can't mix the past and present when trying to perserve a historical site. Provide 5 ways Evans influenced scholarly views of Cretan and Mycenaen civilization.

1. Evan used the myths of Theseus and the Minotaur to guide him to Crete, where he found the “Place of Knossos”. He started excavating the “Place of Knossos” in 1899 and began to find artifacts like pottery, pillars and frescoes. He named the palace “Palace of Minos” and by the end of 1903 he had excavated most of the palace.
2. Published a book in 1921 called “The Palace of Minos at Knossos.”
3. Divided the periods of the Bronze Age Cretan culture into three distinct sections. The sections were Early, Middle, and Late Minoan. This is like the Egyptian dynastic division, which we learned about earlier in this year; Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms.
4. Popularized the world of Aegean civilization. His chief assistant kept a basic daily log of the excavations and because of that Evans helped improve the scientific approach to the excavation process.
5. Found two baked clay tablets with two types of writing on them. The writings were called Linear A and Linear B. Evans was positive that the Minoan civilization developed the first complex and civilized form of writings but later on a man named Michael Ventris, who explained that the linear writing found in Crete was actually Greek, proved him wrong.

5 Ways Sir Evans influenced views on Cretan & Minoan.

1.He gave the name “Minoan” to the Bronze Age Crete.

2.He wrote his own book called The Palace of Minos at Knossos regarding his findings.

3.Sir Evans divided the Bronze Age into 3 periods. Early, Middle, and Late Minoan.

4.He left a daily log from excavations explaining all of his findings. He used a more scientific way rather than the way he was taught.

5.He reconstructed the ruins of Knossos, which led scholars to think he wanted to cover up the ancient world with modern day buldings.

1. One of the ways Arthur Evans influenced the scholarly views on Cretan/Mycean civilization, is that he used myths to help him find where Crete was located. He started to dig in earnest in 1899, and the ruins of Knossos were spectacular. There were some small interruptions in his work, but in 1921 he published the first volume his most famous work, The Palace of Minos at Knossos. By getting this information down, most scholars in the future could learn and analyze from the findings.
2. Sir Arthur Evans is also a significant figure in the fields of anthropology and archeology. He conceived the time of the Minean timeline by dividing the periods of the Bronze Age Cretan culture into three distinct regions: the Early, the Middle, and the Late Mineon. This proves to have helped many scholars after his time, because this division of time has been revised a little, but basically remains the same.
3. Sir Evans also popularized the world of Aegean Civilization and brought it to life by years of work on the elaborate ruins of Crete. Under his command, his chief assistant kept a basic daily log of the excavations, which is a more scientific approach that he took than previous archaeologists.By doing this the correct way, it helps scholars analyze, make conclusions, and have a more accurate data to base their research on.
4. After all of the things mentioned that Evans was, he also represents a great example of what NOT to do in archaeological excavation and restoration. After unearthing the palace ruins at Knossos, the weather began to erode the finds. So Evans then set on a plan of protection and reconstruction. This rebuilding of Knossos took place with contemporarymaterials out of Evan's imagination. When it was done, the palace had a striking resemblance to Art Deco, a style that was common during his times. This is highly disapproved by modern scholars/archaeologists because an onlooker cannot tell the difference between which is the the ancient building or the facsimile(copy).
5. Evan's influence is a reminder of the dangers of mixing modern day views into an ancient world. Since he made he made the mistake of re-creating new buildings over original ruins, it gave modern day scholars the idea to leave a portion of the excavated site, so later generations with better technology, could gain more knowledge than there would have originally been.

Hey I'm never sure if I have to e-mail it AND post it...so here is my lovely post.

-Evans thought of the Minoan timeline, separating everything into “Late, “Middle”, or “Early” periods.

-He pretty much rebuilt the palace ruins in Knossos in the art deco style.

-He rebuilt the temples in a way where you could not tell what was old and what was new.

-He found two forms of writing style called “Linear A” and “Linear B”.

-He shows how people want to believe that they discovered the greatest thing ever, when they really didn’t.

Anónimo dijo...

5 ways Evans influenced scholarly views of Cretan and Mycenaean civilization are:

1. He started excavating on Crete just a few years after Minos Kalokairinos found it and proceeded to uncover more ruins and reconstruct the palace.

2. He named the ruins at Knossos the "Palace of Minos" and started calling the civilization of Crete the "Minoan" civilization.

3. He made a Minoan timeline that split the periods of Bronze Age Cretan culture into 3 parts; These parts were call the Early, Middle, and Late Minoan.

4.One of the less positive things he did was his protection and reconstruction of the palace ruins. He rebuilt it in a way that was different from how it was found and how it was supposed to look.

5. He discovered two forms of script, Linear A and Linear B, that he claims was the most complex and civilized form of writing at the time.

5 ways that Evans influenced the scholarly views of Cretan and Mycenaean civilizations are that

1 he reminded everyone to respect other people’s culture when they were excavating the land.

2 his professor found a lot of things while excavating in Mycenae and that got him into it.

3 He brought the Greek mythology to Crete .

4 He excavated without looking amateur-ish like most excavators from his time

5 He made the first Cretan timeline that for the most part, is still intact today

1. Gave the name Minoans to the civilization of Crete (during Bronze Age), after finding the ruins at Knossos which he named the Palace of Minos.

2. Taught us that it's not a good idea to rebuild ancient buildings because later on historians won't be able to tell what's old and what's new. Not a good idea at all.

3. He came up with the Minoan time line. He divided the periods of the Bronze age into 3; the Early, Middle and Late Minoan. Historians since then have made some simple changes, but it pretty much remains the same .

4.He published in 1921 the first volume of four volumes of THE PALACE OF MINOS AT KNOSSOS, written by him.

5. His chief kept a log of the excavations that Sir Evans and his group did. Much more scientific approach to the excavation process, than people before him showed.

Sir Evans had findings in crete revealing an intrecat maze of the biuldings, pottery, pillars, and frescoas. And also keeping with the myth he dubbed the ruins at Knossos the palace of Minos, and gave the name "minoan" to the civilzation of Bronze age crete. He was also knighted in 1911, and in 1921 published the first volume of his most famous work, the four volume opus entilted The Palace of Minos at Knossos.
He also concieved of the Minoan timeline; the early, Middle, and Late Minoan. He also he uncovered the ruins in Crete. But he did do some bad stuff he reconstructed the ruins of Crete so now you can not tell the diffrence between the new and old parts. So Evans is a reminder about the dangers of grafting modern day views onto an anciant world. But he did discover the Minoan civilazation.

2. He was knighted in 1911 and in 1921 he published his first book the palace of Minos at Knossos Vol. 1
3. He started excavating on the Island of Crete in the year 1899 where he found buildings, pottery, pillars, and frescoes. He called the place "palace of Minos" because of the Homeric myth. He finished excavating in 1903.
4. He was also remembered by what he shouldn't have done when excavating. When he first found the"palace of Knossos" He dug it up, but the ruins started to erode. So he started to reconstruct the ruins. when he finished though it looked more like art deco which was popular around Evan's time. So now scholars frown upon Reconstruction of an archaeological find. Instead they think that a portion must be left undisturbed for future generations to examine with better technology.
5.He found two forms of script writing called Linear A and Linear B. Which he thought was the first complex form of writing. But in the 1950's he was proven wrong by Michael Ventris.

5 ways that Sir Arthur Evans influenced scholarly views of Cretan and Mycennaen civilization.

1. Rebuilt part of an old historical building (ruins at Knossos). This tells us NOt to mix the old with the new when it comes to matters like these, as it can be hard to tell which one is which. Plus, the interior was in art deco style, which, we can obviously tell that the Minoans did not have art deco. This is not cool.

2. Had published the 1st 4 volumes of "The Palace of Minos at Knossos" in 1920, which can give us information on the Minoans.

3. Made the 1st Cretan timeline, which splits into 3 parts: Early, Middle, and Late Minoan.

4. He had brought Greek mythology over to Crete.

5. He had found the two forms of writing (on clay tablets), Linear A, and Linear B. Both were said to be in Crete, but Micheal Ventris proved him wrong, as the forms of writing were actually in Greek.

Many people consider him to be an example of what not to do because e of his careless attempts when he was restoring the ruins. The way that he didn’t pay attention to the weather and it erode lots of the restoration. He also restored it more for his own contemporary sensibility than for science so the new palace ended up having very similar details to Art- Deco.

four. He gave lectures convincing people to believe that his Minoan civilization
had developed the first complex form of witting, later to find out it was
actually Greek.

five. Arthur Evans reconstructed the Palace of Knossos so that the old &
original building blends in with the new building, it all seems to flow together
making it quite difficult to tell the new from the old.

Myths that brought him to crete were Theseus and the Minotaur. Law giver had a wife who was punished by the god Zeus (bull), she gave birth to a “monster” half-man half bull called a Minataur. Which was kept in an underground labyrinth created by Daedalus. Evans found that labyrinth but because of erosion he had to rebuild what he believed was the labyrinth for further last. We learned not to build over sites with modern buildings.
Evans found in Knossos buildings, pottery, Pillars and frescoes.
Published. the first volume of “The palace of Minos at knossos” in 1921.
Created the Minoan timeline with three sections, Early, Middle, and late Minoan. Created by keeping a daily log of excavations.
Made a lecture about the cultures of primitive or lower culture.

Sir Arthur Evans
Provide 5 ways Evans influenced scholarly views of Cretan and Mycenaen civilization.
1-Evans created the Minoan timeline, which divided the periods of Bronze Age Cretan culture into three individual sections. They were the Early, Middle and Late Minoan periods.

2-Evans also helped popularize the Aegean civilization, and through many years hard work, excavated the ruins of Crete.

3- Evans also discovered a type of writing in Crete. He believed that these were the first examples of a written language developed by humans. It was later discovered to have been Greek writing, but it was a significant discovery before it was discovered to be false.

4- When Evans unearthed the palace ruins at Knossos, they faced the danger of falling apart. He began restoring the palace. The restoration didn’t make the palace look much like it did originally, but more modern. Evans mistake reminds us to not to graft modern day views onto ancient civilizations.

5- Also, when Evans rebuilt the palace ruins, he attempted to mix the old with the new, so that anybody that looked at it couldn’t tell what was original and what was new. No one does this anymore because if anyone needed to study the original structure, they wouldn’t be able to tell where it was because the old and the new are to similar to tell apart.

How Sir Arthur Evans influenced scholarly views of Cretan and Mycenaen civilization
1. He began excavating on Crete in the year 1899 and when he discovered his findings at Knossos it proved to others to be spectacular.
2. By the end of 1903 almost the entire palace had been uncovered and so he began to work on the surroundings which had been remarkable to others and had proved a lot that these myths about these other civilizations may be true.
3. His assistant would take note of these discoveries so others may see what Sir Arthur has really found.
4. After his discoveries and his assistants discoveries at Mycenae he had given a lecture at Oxford on the two forms of script writings found in Crete, giving a compare and contrast on the different styles of writing he had found.
5. He had also argued and tried to convince that the civilizations of the Greek time period had no true system of writing until Paleolithic man and proving that the Minoan civilization had developed the first complex and civilized type of writing.

It was hard to understand the 5 ways Evans influenced scholarly views, because the statements were mixed in together in your answer. It would have also helped if you would have put numbers in your answer and if they weren't very broad. With details explaning exactly how Evans influenced scholars, the answers would have been better understood. Ex: Minoan Timeline, palace at Knossos, etc.
Overall it was acceptable job.

Megan: When you worded your 5 reasons in a list, if you read "Evans influenced Cretan and Mycenaen civilization by excavated in Crete in 1899"
it wouldn't make sense. So, make sure if you do it in that format that you will make sure that everything agrees with each other when you write in a list. (I hope this makes sense)

Sir Arthur Evans
Provide 5 ways Evans influeced scholarly views of Cretan and Mycenaen civilization.

#1: He was more interested in finding real civilizations verses finding antique vases and jewels.

#2: What he found at Konossos and the bronze age civilization (Minoan). The four books of The Palace of Minos at Knossos.

#3: Divided the Bronze Age Cretan periods into 3 parts. [Early, Middle, and the Late Minoan.]

#4: One thing he did that today we see as a bad thing is cover up and renovate the old architecture to make it look natural and blend.

#5: He had gone off of the Charles Darwin biological evolution theory and studied the higher and lower cultures.

- Sir Arthur Evans made his own version of King Minos' "labyrinth", amazingly like Art Deco, a popular style those days...

-He created the Minoan timeline, which divided the Bronze Age Cretan cultural periods into distinct sections. This division remains basically intact today.

-He uncovered old buildings, but added or recreated buildings until no modern archaeologists could tell the difference.

-Evans delivered a lecture about the two forms of script found, Linears A and B.

-His chief assistant was directed log their daily progress, which is much more scientific than preceding archaeologists.
