In my oppinion i believe that the most important discovery that Heinrich Schliemann made was his fiindings at Hissarlik. I believe this because here he found over 191 pieces of gold and silver jewelry. Also later on in his life he believed that Hissarlik was actualy Troy. My point of view on the Aegean civilization is still pretty much the same, that I'm still amazed at how they created and worked with preasous metals to create jewelry.

The discovery of Troy, definitely.
I mean usually when we see these ancient people we like to assume that these stories are nothing but myths, but he found Troy BASED ON A BOOK.
Maybe it's the recorded progress of our own nation that makes us skeptical to the legends of the Aegean civilization, but I honestly believe that made people take a second look. They were a lot more sophisticated than we think.
~De'Andreah Hollowell
In my opinion, the most important finding that Heinrich Schliemann made was his findings at Hissarlik.
He found 20 gold earrings, gold spiral rings, 11 silver earrings, 2 electrum bracelets, 158 silver earrings, gold beads, etc., as these times were last time that he would have any luck finding items like these all at once. He had also believed that Hissarlik was actually Troy, as he kept thinking about all of his discoveries. He started to excavate and do more research, and he found a slab of marble and claimed that it was the ruins of Zeus's home.
Most people would say that is crazy, but when you think about it, he had found Troy based on what he had read. It could be that we think this way about Aegean civilization, because our history seems more real to us, as we were there(or grandparents/parents) to see most things happen, when maybe in the future, someday, what we knew and thought was real, could be a myth to someone else.
His discovery really makes all of us take a another glance on what is said to be true or false on the Aegean civilization, or any ancient civilization, for that matter.

Schliemann greatest discovery was that of Homeric (from Homer) Troy in Hissarlik. With all he had going on, he was the first (one of) to be interested in legendary locations that others thought were just myth. It changed what other people thought and so more people became interested in these legendary places.
According to Me.
I believe that the most important discovery Heinrich Schliemann made was the huge discovery of Gold jewelry that he found. I love jewelry and this helps me see that they are actually a more civilized type of group then I thought I mean if they had gold jewelry they got to have some sort of civilization to them.

Heinrich Schliemann’s most important discoveries in my opinion are when he found the vases full of ashes on his excavation in Ithaca. Also, when he discovered the ruins of a palace or temple made out of large blocks in Bunarbashi which he believed to be the site of Troy. When he was determined to find the Priam’s palace it was very impressive for his amount of effort. When he uncovered the relief of the sun god Apollo riding the four horses of the sun. He knew that it was from the Ptolemaic period. I also couldn’t believe how he taught himself fluent Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese in two years which was amazing to read about. He discovered a lot on his excavation on Mycenae. He discovered things like the two tombstones and found several others around it, thought to the bodies of great Agamemnon, Cassandra, Eurymedon, Clytemnestra, and Aegisthus. On the other side of the circle he found an immense building which interpreted a palace. His excavations started to be less exciting throughout some years but he did not give up and kept trying. He eventually uncovered the foundation of a Homeric palace at an excavation at Nauplia. Knowing that Schliemann was a great archeologist and discovered a lot of history made his death very sad to many people. Dieing from a chronically infected ear. During many of his excavations he opened doors for the future.
I believe that the finding Troy was the most important discovery Heinrich Schliemann could have made. (Specifically the treasure of King Priam). The findings of gold cups, rings, earrings, and silver knives, silver vase, and many other things show us that there were several levels of development in those times. Schliemann's discoveries let us know now how people lived, communicated, and spent their time in the olden times. It may have also hinted toward other scholars that there isn't just one Troy. Those discoveries are the evidence for getting to see the past.
~Fabiola Enriquez
I thought that he discovered Troy in Hissarlik. He found Toy by reading. I mean if he did not discover
Troy we would have a giant clump of history missing. Just imagine everything you learned just not there. We would not anything about Troy and who used to live there were they involved in the Trojen war and etc.

I think Schliemann's most important discovery was when he was in Hissarlik. On October 21, 1878 he found a small cache that had 20 gold earrings, gold spiral earrings, 2 electrum bracelets, 11 slver rings, 158 silver rings and a lot of gold beads inside the cache. In the long run he got to keep 1/3 of the jewelry. The rest of was claimed at the Imperial Museum at Constantinople. I think that he was lucky to keep any of jewel's he had found in teh cache. After reading about Schliemann I still have the same point of view on the Aegean civilization. They both have similarties. exp.- gold, silver and jewelery were common.

When Schliemann went to troy in 1872, he discovered a woman’s skeleton (who he believed died during the burning of troy).
From then on in Troy he found a large building behind gates- which he named the entrance Scaean gates and the building Priam’s place.
His findings support the site of Homeric troy during the Aegean civilization.

i disagree with you. in my opinion the discovery of troy was way more important than jewrly. especially the way he found it using homers books.
the comment about april is bianca daniels sorry i forgot to put my name
In my opinion, his most important discovery was when he discovered the Scaean Gates, Priam's Palace, and all the artifacts near there. These include a copper shield, a copper cauldron, a silver vase, a copper vase, a gold bottle, 2 gold cups, a small electrum cup, a silver goblet, 3 silver vases, 7 double-edged copper daggers, 6 silver knife blades, 13 copper lance-heads, 3 gold diadems, a fillet, 4 gold ear-drops, 56 gold earrings, and 8,750 gold rings and buttons. This is very significant because it is an IMMENSE amount of gold and silver. These are very valuable. This affects my view of Aegean civilizations by making me think that maybe they were richer or better off than I thought. This stuff is all gold and silver, and so were most of his other discoveries. That must have been very expensive. At least, it would be today.

I think that Heinrich Schliemann's most important discovery is that of the 190 houses at Ithica. While this didn't show what city was there, it shows us what stage of development they were at the time. It also shows us how the people who weren't upper class lived. There might also be household items in the ruins like religious artifacts. When we find a set of houses that didn't belong to the higher classes it gives us a better rounded view of the way these people lived. Laura Johnson
commenting to Megan Crawford
I disagree with your answer because I think that the exense of a object is as important as what it tells you about the civilization as a whole.

In your opinion, what was the most important discovery Schliemann made, and how did it affect our point of view of the Aegean civilization today?
In my opinion the most important discovery Schliemann made was the discovery near the Scaean Gates. He found the treasure (copper shield, silver vase, 2 gold cups, 56 gold earrings, and 8,750 gold rings and buttons) of King Priam. It showed that the Aegean Civilization had a lot of money to afford all the gold and silver. So it was a very well established civilization.

The most important discovery that Heinrich Schliemann made to me was that the found the skeleton of a woman that he thought was burned when Troy was burned down. I find this intresting because I didn't know that skeletons could stay intact for that lomg, let alome stay intact if it was burned.

I think his most important find was the graves south of the lions head gate. The graves were in a circle with gold funerary in the middle and he thinks they were the bodies of Agamemnon, Eurymedon, Clytemnestra and Aegisthus.
I think it affects our point of view because they put all the bodies in a circle and now we just put them in a line and it makes us think about how much stuff has changed since then. And also that they kept gold and stuff with the bodies and now its just a body and nothing else.
The most important discovery that Heinrich Schliemann made was the discovery of the golden treasure near the Scaean Gates. After excavating the further the found many things like copper shields and cauldrons, silver vases and goblets, copper daggers and vases, gold bottles and earrings, and thousands of gold rings and buttons. Not only is this an important discovery because of the findings, it is also very significant because Heinrich Schliemann recorded the information for the first time. This was important to the Aegean civilization because it popularized the civilization. This discovery is also important because Schliemann learned the importance of making a log of the things that you find.

In your opinion, what was the most important discovery Schliemann made, and how did it affect our point of view of the Aegean civilization today?
I think that Schliemann's most important discovery was the treasure that he found at Hissarlik. It included 2 gold cups, a small electrum cup, a silver goblet, 3 silver vases, 7 double-edged copper daggers, 6 silver knife blades, and much more. Seeing as his research was based off of a book, this was a pretty big discovery. This changed our view of the Aegean society by (I think) making us think twice about being so quick to dismiss something about their culture or society that we may think is false. It shows that sometimes, you have to think outside of the box to get the entire picture.
-Maddie Hoffman
In my opinion Heinrich most important discovery is when he found 20 vases with the ashes of what he thought to be human remains. They also uncovered a sacrificial knife which which 6 inches long and a clay goddess figurine with it were animal bones. This is possibly who their dead were buried they were some what similar to the Egyptians. They could have used the knife for sacrifices to the gods and the bones could have been from some of the later sacrifices that they found. So thought this discovery that Heinrich found in the summer of 1868 could have opened up an entire bank of information on their religion and burial skills and performances.

I think that the biggest potential discovery he made was of the 190 houses in July 1878 because that would have been way useful on finding out more about the lifestyle of the common people. He didn't think it was that important because there wasn't anything made out of precious medals I guess, so he stopped working on the site. It doesn't really effect our view on the world today, since we didn't get to learn from it.
To Donna Davidson,

In my opinion Schliemann’s most important discovery were his findings at Hissarlik. He found many important things among them were, 2 electrum bracelets, gold spiral rings, 20 gold earrings, 158 silver rings, 11 silver earrings, gold beads. Though he could only keep one-third of the treasure the Imperial Museum at Constatinople kept the rest, which I think was a good idea because the artifacts were safer inside of a museum than in the hands of a single man. This helped archeologists and others to understand the Aegean civilizations a little more than they did before. They have proof that something important took place at Hissarlik.

When he was excavating the site that was believed to be Homeric Troy hew found 3 earrings 1 dress pin and bones of a woman. he could tell by the color of the bones that they had been burned in a fire of some sort. This could count as some evidence that the oddyssey and the illiad did in fact take place. This is just a hint to people of the mo0dern world that maybe these books actually did take place. I mean or it could be just like some lady who's house caught on fire but the fact that he used Homer/ the book as his guide to find these excavations because he was obssesed with the greek philosphies about the gods. I believe that this gives people in the modern day world some hints of what could have possibly taken place in the ancient world of the greeks. I believe that this is very important because it is evidence from the past.

In your opinion, what was the most important discovery Schliemann made, and how did it affect our point of view of the Aegean civilization today?
I believe that Schliemann's most signifigant discovery was the excavation of the 190 houses at Ithaca. Schliemann believed there was nothing of "value" where he was excavating, but all he was excavating for were gold and other things he could sell for money. A true archeologist would have known that this is a very valuable find, although not in the monetary sense, but in the historical sense. The houses would contain a look at the civilizations culture, and how the people that lived there lived. We would possibly be able to find out where these people slept, what they did for fun, what they dressed like, what their architectural techniques were like [how they built what they built, what they used to built what they built, etc.] The houses Schliemann excavated can give us more information on what their society was like than any item containing precious metal could. Sadly, the houses that were discovered didn't really affect our point of view on the Aegean civilization, because Schliemann didn't study them in depth because he was to busy looking for things of "value", or at least it didn't mention anything about the houses in the article.

I think that his most important discovery was what he found in Hissarlik. He found alot of jewelry. In September of 1878, He found a treasure that consisted of gold disks, earings, sosme gold spiral rings, 2 electrum bracelets, 11 silver earings, 158 silver rings, and many gold beads. I think that it really didn't effect my point a view about the Aegean Civilization. I think that the Aegean Civilization is way different from the ancient egypt alot. The Aegean civilization consists of more jewelry and ancient egypt consisted of more make-up type instead of jewelry.

The most important discovery that Schliemann made was when he found the treasure of kind Priam. I think the most important discovery Schliemann made was the discovery of fresco of the boy jumping over the bull. I think this because it was the first inscription of bull worship ever found. It changed our view of the civilization today by providing us with a basis on how the Aegean civilization viewed bulls. I believe that the most important discovery that Heinrich Schliemann made was
the big one, the discovery of Troy and the Mycenaean sites. I mean, no one was
ever really dedicated enough to Homer's tales; that's all they thought they
were, tales. He actually followed the information given by the book, made some
lucky guesses and found himself the archeological findings of Troy. If it

Heinrich Schliemann's most important accomplishment in my opinion is finding the treasure of King Priam. He and Sophie, his cousin, kept it a secret from the crew. The found: a copper shield, a copper cauldron, a silver vase, a copper vase, a gold bottle, 2 gold cups, a small electrum cup, a silver goblet, 3 silver vases, 7 double-edged copper daggers, 6 silver knife blades, 13 copper lance-heads, 2 gold diadems, a fillet, 4 gold ear-drops, 56 gold earrings, and 8,750 gold rings and buttons.
Although it didn't really get much attention because of its' secretivity, I believe if affected our point of view of the Aegean civilization by showing us their sign of wealth and the importanance of rulers during that time. It also shows that the Aegean people were probably very concerned with looking wealthy and beautiful.

I think that Schliemanns most important discovery was the one he made near the Scaean Gates. The reason i think this is the most important is because this was the excavation with the most value and the most stuff. A lot of his other excavations werent much because they were just what he thought they were going to be not what they really were. I really liked your answer because it didn't really seem like a major discovery at first but when you think about it the discovery is very important

I really liked your answer and i agree with you that his most important discovery was at Scaean Gates.

I really liked how developed and descriptive your answer was. It seems like you knew what you were talking about

Does anyone know if there is going to be any questions on the homer article or the minotuar article? I don't want to feel stupid when everyone tells me they were up, but I just go to the blog to early. If you coud tell me that would be great!

COMMENTING ON APRIL:
I don't think that jewelry was more important than Troy. While it could imply they had a lot of wealth, someone could argue that maybe they stole it, therefore jewelry doesn't hold that much significance.
COMMENTING ON AVA:
Wow, you're answers were very well detailed. It's true that we have this "see it to believe it" thing going on.
COMMENTING ON ALISON R:
I thought that you were correct about the evidence that was found supported the existence of Troy, however I don't think you answered the second part of the question.
~De'Andreah Hollowell.
Schliemann discovered Troy. Before he did, it was only thought of as a mythical place. Without him uncovering it in 1872, we would still think Troy was nothing but a religious tale.

Comment to Lexie:
You said that he found 11 silver rings and then 200-some silver rings...I think you meant to say gold or something for one of them?
Comment to Ava:
Well, since he didn't really find Troy for sure, then I don't really think it's uber amazing that he found a bunch of jewelry. Well, yeah, it's cool...but it's not like there's going to be a special on the history channel for it. Just a thought.
Commenting to Hannah Tripp:
I'm not just talking about the jewelry that he found, I also mentioned that because of these findings, he started to do more research and excavating, which led to him trying to find Troy.
Commenting to Yasmen Wells:
I liked how you when you mentioned the artifacts such as the jewelry, you explained why they can really give us a look into the Aegean civilization, like that they probably had a lot of wealth and cared about looks. Good job.
Commenting to Kelly Drelles:
I liked how you said that Heinrich's most important discovery was that he actually recorded everything that he found, which opened up people's minds about this civilization. Well put.
--Ava Gumowski
COMMENTING ON MAY HOGAN:
I like your explanation for why you think his discovery near the Scaean Gates. But, for a suggestion, you coould of related it to how it influences our knowledge of the Aegan civilization.
COMMENTING ON TATIANA PADRON:
You're really discriptive about what you think is most important. But I think you put a little extra information, it's good, but I think it's too much.
-Haley Young
In your opinion, what was the most important discovery Schliemann made, and how did it affect our point of view of the Aegean civilization today?
By; Emily bennett:
I think that the most important discovery that he made was that he realized that money isn't everything and he became a archeologist.
which lead him to find all of the treasures that he found such as king priam with which he discovered many treasures of rare.and he also started
digging near lions gate and he uncovered what was to seem like 5 mummies of deceased people he'd been reading about his entire life.
To: Eulices
Way to be specific, and to answer the question in completion, but in my opinion this doesn't exactly proove Homer or anything.
In my opinion his most important discovery was when he found the golden treasure near the scaean gates, because hid his discovery(the treasure of king priam) they found copper shields, copper cauldrens, silver vase, copper vase, golden bottle,2 gold cups, a small electrum cup, silver goblet, 3 silver vases, 7 double edged copper daggers, 6 silver knife blades, 2 gold diadems, 56 gold earrings, 8750 gold rings and buttons. He smuggled it away on may 30, 1873. Then he split up the treasue with friends so that neither the greek nor the turkish government could claim ownership. I just think that's in interesting story.without that evidence he might not have been able to prone homer right.

To: De'Andreah Hollowell
I agree. I think it's remarkable that he could actually follow the book and excavate the right areas and come up with all the artifacts he did. Well worded as well. Makes me think. ;]
--Andrea Stewart
For De'Andreah I think you did a good job on your comment. It shows your feelings well. It cant get better than that
For Donna Yor comments had lots of good details and showed how if effected your point of veiw, good job!
Stephen King
To Bianca I like jewelry and this was a personal question so that's my answer for it, that's what I believe was most important he found a lot of gold and jewelry hundreds and maybe thousands and that's my answer you can believe what you want to believe though I'm not trying to change your feelings just putting mine out there.
~!*April Cassita Signing out*!~
I didnt say they were better than other civilizations I said they showed me that they are more civilized than I thought they were.
to de'andreah
i think your answer was well put together it shows your own personal opinion and it's a logical answer i don't think that if you got in a debate about this subject you saying that one little paragraaph would win the entire thing. good job :)

Tatiana dixon:
i think that your answer was informational and well put together i must say i loved reading about the jewelry as well and it's nice to see that someone likes the same things that i do and intrests are the same it makes me want to go back and see how the jewelry of today looked like back then it's cool how everything has evolved into what it is.
by:EMILY BENNETT
To make it more specific I thoguht his discovery in Hissarlik was a very important discovery he found 20 gold earrings, gold spiral rings, 2 electrum bracelets, 11 silver earrings, 158 silver rings, and lots of gold beads. I don't think it was very fair that he lot 2/3's of his findings though. Another big jewelry discovery was the golden treasure he found near the Scean Gates he found 56 gold earrings and 8,750 gold rings and buttons and although he found more things in that journey I am only pointing out the jewelry.
