Ok anonymous person who wrote, you are supposed to e-mail Mrs. Velez. And you won't even get credit for this probably because you did not leave your name on the comment. or the page numbers. Smart.
commmenting on anonimo who didn't leave thier name. your answers are actually pretty good. don't worry i won't copy them. but, ya just an FYI
i found the mumiffication proccess very very interesting. it would be soo wiered if they had to that though if you were a live... that would hurt a lot! i think it was a good way to perserve them though. with out that or anything we wouldn't know much about them/ Pharoes. it was also cool that they handled every thing with care and cleaned everything ... took out the brain and put some of that stuff in jars. i wonder though where the jars are/ what happened to them. maybe you should think about that next commenter. by:unanimous
ok then. i don't like scrabble
I thought the brain thing was really really really gross. I mean they took it out through it's nose!!! That is like as gross as you can get, well not really but still. i mean its like a major form of nose picking. Sick!
1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
Mummification was called “The Cult of the Dead” because you had to be mummified to live on in the afterlife. It’s described as a cult because you had to be dead and mummified to “join”.
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
Mummification was essential to live in the paradise of the afterlife. Your body needed to be perfectly preserved to live on. It was also important to have your whole body preserved, because, for example if you lost an arm or leg, you wouldn’t have that part in the afterlife.
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
Ancient Egyptians embalming techniques started with removing the internal organs through a small incision on the abdomen [except the heart, which was thought to be where emotions come from], cleaning all the organs in wines and spices, cleaning out the abdominal cavity with cedar oil, scraping out the brain with a hooked instrument through the nose and washing out the remains with cedar oil and spices and packing the body and organs in natron to dry them out, leaving them for a month. After the month, he washes the body in scents and spices, wraps the internal organs in linen cloth, then puts them back in the abdominal cavity or puts them in jars, weaving fake hair into the remains of the original, inserting fake eyes, and then restoring the body to lifelike-ness [described in question 4]. After that, the body is wrapped in up to a mile and a half of resin smeared linen, and handed back to the family for burial.
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
Ancient Plastic Surgery was the restoration of the dead and shrunken body to look lifelike. This involved the insertion of linen wads into the body and face to make the body look less shrunken and more lifelike and coloring the skin with colored dirt [if the corpse is male, then red dirt, if the corpse is female, yellow dirt.]

The Cult of the Dead
Here are the comprehension questions about the article "The Cult of the Dead". Please provide the paragraph number on your response (along with page; 1 or two). Some questions only require your personal opinion; you do not have to provide page numbers for those.
1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
The religious belief of having an afterlife soon created the cult of the dead. So by believing in the afterlife and being mummified they added and became a part of the cult of the dead.
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
If you weren’t mummified correctly and part of you wasn’t preserved correctly then you would have to live in the afterlife without that part of your body. Which would ruin your paradise/afterlife.
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
They would take out the internal organs and the brain. Then they would clean them with red wine and spices. They would also clean the abdominal area with cedar oil. The cedar oil would dissolve all the left over tissue in the abdominal. Then they dry all the body parts with powdered natron.
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
They used molded wads of linen under the skin. It is very similar to how a present day cosmetic surgeon would use silicone implants on a (living) patient.
Jazzy Benson
History 9-3
1.Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
In about 3100 BC, religious belief in the afterlife became a virtual “cult of the dead.” The devote thought mummification was very important and so it became very important to Egyptian life. Mummification was a called “the cult of the dead” because it was the process of preparing the dead for paradise which was started by the religious cult.
Pg.1
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
If you did not carefully mummify the dead body it could lose a part (body part) of itself and it was thought that any part lost in the grave would not be on the body in paradise. The body could not enjoy paradise if it was missing a body part.
Pg.1
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
First the body would be laid in a powdery mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, which soaks up all of the body’s moisture. Then the body’s organs would be removed, all except for the heart and the body would be cleaned with wine and spices. The embalmer now wraps each organ in linen cloth and puts them in the abdominal cavity or in jars. He performs “plastic surgery” on the body and he paints the body. Finally he wraps the body in resin-smeared linen and when he is done he returns the body to its family who provide a tomb for it.
Pg. 1 & 2
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
The “ancient plastic surgery” is used on the body to make it look more “alive”. The embalmer makes tiny cuts on the face and neck of the body and inserts carefully molded wads of linen under the skin.
Pg.2
Mallory Caillaud-Jones
1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
Because you need to be mummified to pass on to the afterlife.
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
The dead would not be able to enjoy paradise or afterlife if they were not preserved. It was thought that if they lost the part on there body they would also lose it in the after life.
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
The embalmers used rock salt called natron instead of sand witch drew out all moisture. Then they cleaned out al the internal organs with perfumes and solvents. Then they were sealed with 1oos of yards of bandages.
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
It was used to make the body look more alive. The embalmer makes cuts on the face and places molded wads of linen under the skin. Jacob Green
1. Mummification was called “The cult of the dead” because the bodies didn’t decompose and they still had a lifelike appearance, skin , and hair after centuries. (pg. 1: paragraph 1 and 2)
2. Mummification was very important in regards to the enjoyment of paradise because it was believed that a body that lost any part of itself in their grave would be forever lost of that body part. That’s why the human figures that are represented usually have both of their arms and legs when we see them as decorative pieces in Egyptian tombs. That is one of the reasons why the preservation of bodies was very important. (pg.1: paragraph 2)
3. The embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptians:
Using a knife made of flint, the embalmer would make a four inch long cut in the left side of the abdomen. He would then take out all of the internal organs(except the heart) and clean them in wine and spices. After that , he flushes out the abdominal cavity with cedar oil so that the remaining soft tissue dissolves. He now forces a hooked instrument through the nostril and into the skull and starts scraping the brain out of the cavity. Again, he flushes out the cavity with cedar oil to flush out any remaining brain matter. After he cleans the whole body thoroughly, he packs all of the body and its organs in powdered natron to dry them. After about a month of this, he removes and washes every part in scents and spices again. Now, he wraps everything individually in linen cloth and places it back in the abdominal cavity (or possibly jars). He goes o to pack with more stuffing material like linen, sawdust, mud, or tar. He is now done with the embalming process, sews up the incision, and starts performing “ancient plastic surgery”. After that he starts wrapping and bandaging the body. (pg.2:embalmers art:2nd, 3rd, 4th , 5th paragraph)
4. “Ancient plastic surgery” is pretty much when the embalmer attempts to make a dead body appear to look more lifelike. He does this by weaving in artificial hair and inserting painted eyes into the eye sockets. He also places molded wads of linen under the skin to make the person look more lifelike. He finally colors the face(and sometimes the whole body) with the colored earth called ocher. If you’re a male, you’re painted red and if you’re a female, you’re painted yellow. From beginning to end the whole embalming process takes approximately 70 days. (pg.2:embalmers art: paragraph 5)

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
As Egyptian society grouped- the religious belief in the afterlife became a 'virtual cult of the dead'. They became very devout and thought it was necessary for the body to be preserved to be able to enjoy paradise. Page One, Paragraph Two.
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
Very Important. If a body lost any part (of their body) the dead wouldn't be able to enjoy eternity in Paradise.
Page One, Paragraph Two.
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
Instead of relying on the sand, the ancient egyptians used a kind of rokc salt called natron. The natron acted like a sponge, sucking all the moisture from the body. Then perfumes and otherr solvents were used to clean our the internal organs. The body was lastly warpped and sealed tightly with hundreds of yards of linen bandages.
Amulets were hidden within to guard the dead person from evil spirits.
Page One, Paragraph Three.
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
Ancient plastic surgery was making a dead person's face and body looking alive again, instead of looking like a raisin.
The 'surgeon' makes tiny cuts and stuffing them with molded wads of linen. Finally the embalmer colors the face and sometimes the whole body with the colored earth.
Page Two, Paragraph 5.

Commenting on Zac Abid..
On the first question, I don't think that was exactly what the question was referring to, although I admit-it makes sense. But I think they were still talking about about the living.
Commenting on May Hogan..
I disagree with your answers to question no.1 and no.2. Well no.2 was good but I think you needed a little more. Like how if any of the body parts were lost, they wouldn't be able to enjoy paradise.
For no.1, I don't think they were referring to the dead as the actual cult but the devout. The ones who believed and carried out the process of mummification.
1. Mummification was called the cult of the dead becuase it was believed that you could only enter paradise if you were mummified. I guess the ancient Egyptians thought of the dead as a cult, because there are so many of them.( page 1, paragraph 1)
2. Mummification was quintissial because if you weren't mummified, you could not enter paradise. (if you didn't have all of your body parts)(page 1, paragraph 2)
3. First, a cut is made through which he pulls ou the internal organs, minus the heart. He then cleans the internal organs with wine and spices. Then, he flushes out the abdominal cavity with cedar oil to dissolve the remaining soft tissue. He then pulls ou the brain through a nostril, next he infuses the cavity that once held the brain with cedar oil and spices in order to flush out residues of brain matter. Last, all the organs and the body itself are packed in powdered natron to dry them. They stay there for about a month. (page 2,paragraphs 2 and 3)
4. "Ancient plastic surgery" was a way of making the body and face of a dead person look likelike. To do this an embalmer will go all over the body making tiny cuts and carefully packing small wads of linen under the skin. (page 2, paragrachs 5 and 6)

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
Egyptians had a religious belief that the afterlife became a “virtual cult of the dead”. Mummification was called the cult of the dead because it was preparing the corpses for the trip to the afterlife and to paradise. [PAGE 1]
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
It was very important to the Egyptians. The body needed to be mummified in order to live in paradise in the afterlife. And if you lost a body part than you would not have a part in the afterlife. Also they would put necklaces on the mummies to ward away evil spirits on the journey to paradise. [PAGE 1]
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
First, the embalmers would soak the body in powdered natron (sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate) for about a month to dry the body. Then, they’d take all the organs (except the heart) out and wash them in wine and spices and wrap them in linen then put it back in the abdomen or put it in jars. Then, he performs ‘ancient plastic surgery’ to fill in lines, puts in painted eyeballs, and paints the body. Finally, he wraps the body in resin-smeared linen (about 8,000 feet in length), when he’s finished with everything he gives the body to its family. Then the family puts it in a wooden box or whatever they’ve chosen. [PAGE 1 & 2]
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
The embalmer would make tiny cuts on the body and insert molded wads of linen under the skin. It’s similar to what a 21st century cosmetic surgeon would do. [PAGE 2]

Commenting on Zac Abid..
I really like you answer for how embalmers did the "plastic surgery", you explained everything about how they'd paint the males and females different colors. I also like you answer for number two. You explained everything really well.
Commenting on Savannah Smith..
You did really well on all of your questions. Except maybe for number three. You could've explained with more detail about how they prepared the mummies for the afterlife. Otherwise, good job!

I disagree with your answer to number 1. they would still go to the after life if they werent mummified but any body parts lost from their body would br lost to their spirit too. Laura Johnson.
1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
As Egyptian society became more closely organized, it came to believe that preservation of the body was not only possible but essential if the dead were to be able to enjoy paradise. (page 1, paragraph 4 )
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
it was very important because it was believed that if a body lost any part of itself in the grave, it would be deprived of that part for all eternity. (Page 1, paragraph 5)
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
the embalmer cuts a four inch long incision on left side of the abdomen. Then he pulls out every organ except the heart, cleans each organ in spices and wine. Then he flushes out the abdominal cavity with cedar oil. He then removes the brain with a hook. He packs all the organs and the body with powered natron. After a month he removes them and washes every part in more scents and spices. Then he wraps the dried internal organs individually in linen cloth and puts them back into the abdominal cavity and sews up the original cut, or in separate earthenware or alabaster jars. He inserts painted eyes into the skulls sockets.then all he as left to do is restoration of the body , back to lifelike fullness.(page 2, paragraphs 4-6)
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
The embalmer slowly makes tiny cuts over the body and packs carefully molded wads of linen under the skin. Even the lines of the face and neck are restored like this, with packing laid in the mouth to hold the checks in position. Finally the embalmer colors the face and sometimes the whole body with colored earth called ocher(red if male and yellow if female). (page 1, paragraphs 6-7)

Commenting to Maria Gonzalez
I'm not sure i completely agree with your answer to number 2. Yes, thats the basics of it, but it's not that they couldn't enjoy themselves. They just didn't have that limb, or body part in the afterlife.
~Monika Steffens
1. Mummification was called the Cult of the Dead because it was the Egyptians' religion to embalm and wrap their deceased, supposedly to get them ready for the afterlife. (pg 1)
2. It was very important to be mummified correctly if you wanted to enjoy paradise. If a body lost any part of itself in the grave, then it would be deprived of that part for all eternity. That's why most decorated Egyptian tombs include both arms and legs. (pg 1)
3. The first thing the embalmer would do is the left side of the abdomen and take all of the internal organs out, except the heart. He then cleans the organs with wines and spices, and flushes out the abdomen cavity with cedar oil. He then scrapes the brain out, and packs all of the organs and body in powdered natron to dry them. A month later, he washes all of them with scents and spices, and wraps them with cloth linen, and puts them in the abdominal cavity, along with other stuffing. The Egyptian then has to weave artificial hair, perform artificial surgery, and color the whole face (body). Wrappping the body would then come next, and he would then turn the mummy to the family for further arrangements.
(pg. 2)
4. Ancient Plastic surgery was restoration of a shrunken body/face to a lifelike body fullness. The embalmer would do this by working slowly along the body and making tiny cuts, and packing carefully molded wads of linen under the skin. Packing laid in the mouth would hold up the cheeks, and finally the embalmer would color the face (body) with colored earth called ocher. (pg. 2)

1. Mummification was called the cult of the dead because in order to have a life in the after life you had to be mummified and because it was so big to be mummifies it was like a cult.1
2. It was very important to live in paradise (afterlife). You had to be preserved so your body could live on. Mummifying the body keeps it well preserved in which that was what you needed to live on.1
3.Your entire body would be covered with baking soda and all your organs were removed from your body. Then you would wrap the body in 100 yards of linen. 1
4. Ancient plastic surgery is when the corpse inside body parts were removed. They would paint it either red or yellow depending on what sex you were. Then the corpse is bandaged which is a long process.

COMMENTING TO Zac Abid:
I really liked how you explained all of your answers thoroughly. You especially had more than enough in number 3. I never knew that it took so long and so much work to make a mummy. The part that was interesting to me was the Egyptians would go as far putting make up and fake eye balls on the deceased, to then wrap the whole body up and put them in a case.
Oh well, everyone has diffrent viws.
~Fabiola Enriquez
COMMENTING ON JACOB GREEN:
The answer to #3 was acceptable, although it would have helped understand the whole process better if you could have added more detail. Like for by saying where they would make the cuts, how long it all took, and what exact solvents they used. By mentioning all of these small details, they could have painted a much better picture. Over all decent job.
PS: Perfume was used to hide the smell, not clean the body.

1. After 3100 BC, the Egyptians religious belief in the afterlife developed into a virtual cult of the dead. They believed that preservation of the body was very important if the dead were able to enjoy paradise in their afterlife.
2. The mummification process was very important, to those that could afford it. A belief was any part of the body that was lost in its grave; the body would live without it forever.(in its afterlife)
3. The embalmer first cuts the abdomen to pull out all the internal organs. He removes the brain by scraping it out with a hooked tool trough the nose. After thoroughly cleaning every part of the body, he soaks all the organs and the body in natron for about a month. He then cleans every part of the body again and begins the wrapping process.
4. The most difficult of the embalmers jobs is performing ancient plastic surgery or making the shrunk lines of the body and face to look lifelike. This is done by making tiny cuts and packing wads of linen under the skin or even in the mouth.

To Zac Abid.
I like your answer for the cult of the dead question. Its something that no one else would think about.
- A lison Robinson

Embalming you is not really what they thought of as plastic surgery.
-Alison Robinson
To Zac Abid.
I like how you fully explained your answer in question 3. You really understood what you were talking about.

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead". Because the mummification was only preformed by some people. Everyone else didn’t want to know how it happened. Page1, paragraph2
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise? If your body was damaged (loss of limbs, skin, etc.) you would have a lost limb or skin in paradise. Page1, paragraph2
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptians. First of all they extracted the brain with a bronze hook, and then they removed the internal organs and then covered the body in natron for 40-70 days, and finally was bandaged and buried. page2, paragraph 7
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was. The Egyptians used reeds and leather to sculpt a mummy’s nose. Seashells were also used as fake eyes. Pretty crazy if you ask me. Page2, paragraph 10

Thanks a lot for telling every detail about mummification. Your answer was really indepth. The doesn;t make it any less disgusting.

You had a good description. Honestly i didn't read that part that thoroughly, but you obviously did. Wow they used a lot of bandages.

question number 2
I did not see it from that point of view before, i saw it from the view that if you lost anything you wouldn't get it back, but you said if you weren’t mummified you wouldn't get anything in the afterlife nice.

After all of that was done, he would pack the body and organs into powdered natron for a month so they would dry out. I thought that you had some answers that seemed straight from the text. But the other answers seemed more personalized, like you really read the article and understood it, unlike some poeple. You seemed to add your own spice to it (if thats what you want to call it). So, ya, good job on that.

I would have liked more detail on #3 and #2 didn't talk at all about loosing body parts if the mummification was not done carefully and correctly. You also forgot to put the page number, look out for that next time.
Otherwise #1 and #4 were informative and correct.

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
It seemed as if they pampered the corpse so they can get through to paradise. They took it very serious. The word “mummy” is derived from the Persian word mummia, which means bitumen. They soaked the bodies in tar, for decomposition leaving them with hair, skin, and a life like appearance.
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
They made sure that every body part was in the tomb and the tomb was very elaborate. For making the tombs it cost a lot of money. It was all to go to paradise. The body preservation was an essential for them to enjoy paradise.
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
The embalmed the corpse to guard them from evil spirits on their way to paradise. First, the body was sealed inside and out with a thick coating of resin or even sometimes honey which hid the decay of tissues. Second, strong perfumes covered up the lingering smell, and life like portraits on wooden cases where placed with it to replace the painstaking.
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
He takes out all the organs like heart, brain, liver, etc. He cleans everyone separately with spices, oils, and scents. It is all for preservation of the body so it doesn’t discenigrate. He fills the empty spots in the body with tar, mud, wads of linen, or even saw dust.

Comment to Kelly:
I loved how well thought out and complete your answers were. Awesome job! :]
Comment to Emily Bennett:
Although I liked your answers pretty much I thought you should have shown better use of grammar and punctuation and all that good stuff, this is an assignment and not a conversation on AIM.
Also, on number one, I think that death was a huge part of Egyptian civilization. Pharaoh's spent half their lives building their temples and they were very into the idea of life after death. Just a thought.
Comment to Gabriela:
I think you should've explained more of the process of what the embalmer does.
-Maddie
Comment to Caitlyn:

The Cult of the Dead
Here are the comprehension questions about the article "The Cult of the Dead".
Please provide the paragraph number on your response (along with page; 1 or
two). Some questions only require your personal opinion; you do not have to
provide page numbers for those.
1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
Religious beliefs developed the idea of an afterlife and the idea of preserving
the body became essential.
So the belief in an afterlife formed a cult of the dead.
--page one, paragraph three.
2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
They wanted to preserve the body because they believed that if a body part was
lost in a grave, that part would not be returned to them in the afterlife,
therefore, no paradise.
--page one, paragraph three.
3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptians.
The Egyptians who couldn't afford tombs & where buried in the sand didn't need much to preserve them, the sand pretty much kept
them from decaying. Those Egyptians who were buried in tombs, who weren't in
contact with the sand needed rock salt, natron, to preserve them. The natron
would dry out the bodies, then perfumes & solvents would be used to clean out
the organs. The body was then wrapped in linen bandages and sealed with some
sort of rosin or some used honey.
--page one, paragraphs four & five.
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
The process of embalming a body took quite a long time, and by the time the
embalmer was about done taking out the organs and what not, the body, most
importantly the face, had shrunken and the body truly looked dead. So the
embalmer carefully packed molded wads of linen under the skin and then colored
the skin, red if the body is that of a male, yellow if it's that of a female.
--page two, paragraphs five & six.
--Andrea Stewart
Commenting Mallory:
I never knew the family had to take care of the tomb. I thought the embalmers would have just taken it there anyways.
--Andrea Stewart
Commenting Ethan:
I'm not sure it was so much as they didn't want to know but more of they already had different beliefs about what happens to you?
